DFU mode is ‘Device Firmware Update’ that bypasses the current iOS installation and allows user to update firmware on apple devices. In DFU mode Apple device can interface with iTunes but does not load its operating system or boot loader. Recovery Mode for Apple device allows user to do a standard iOS upgrade or restore on iPhone, iPad or iPod. These two are different from each other.
Recovery Mode is different than DFU mode because DFU mode bypasses the bootloader which allows upgrading as well as the downgrading firmware on Apple device. You can not downgrade firmware with Recovery Mode. With recovery mode, you can only upgrade or restore firmware. DFU mode results in black screen of device, while recovery mode displays USB and iTunes icon on the device screen.
